The Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain is a 4×4 pick-up truck, and it is the flagship variant in Isuzu’s pick-up truck line-up here in Malaysia. If you are looking for a pick-up truck, the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain certainly is one to consider because it has loads of features that elevate it above others in its price and size range.
In fact, the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain for 2024 is equipped more like an SUV, and some say it is more SUV than most SUVs. This could be due in some part to the differences in import duties levied upon SUVs and pick-up trucks, i.e. SUVs have to pay more in duties and taxes, and therefore they cost substantially more even if they were of similar size and capacity. As a result, auto makers have to be more judicious when deciding on accessories packages for their SUVs than when they are deciding on the specifications of their pick-up trucks so as to keep their retail prices competitive.
Thus, we do end up with the pick-up trucks with better specifications than SUVs of similar size, and in the case of Isuzu, the automaker sells mostly trucks and pick-up trucks, and therefore they put in extra effort to make the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain as good as possible.
For instance, the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain comes with a remote start function – with this function you can start your truck up a few minutes earlier remotely, and run the air-conditioner to cool down the interior – a really convenient feature especially if you are out on a hot afternoon. I have seen some cars that have this feature, and perhaps a couple of SUVs that have this feature, but not all SUVs have it.
Despite all the above convenience features, the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain possesses robust off-road capabilities, outperforming many traditional SUVs in handling rough terrains.
Featuring a highly capable 4×4 system, Rough Terrain Mode (RTM), and superior ground clearance, the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain is built to conquer challenging off-road conditions with ease. RTM works with the vehicle Traction Control System (TCS), engaging it earlier when RTM is engaged, to minimize wheel slip, and therefore improve traction. Thus, the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain excels in environments that would challenge many conventional SUVs, making it a top choice for adventurers seeking rugged reliability and performance. In fact, the RTM is not a feature in many of Isuzu’s competitors, being more often found in SUVs and even then, not in all SUVs.
People buy SUVs for the additional height, and perhaps for additional space – the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain combines the functionality of a pickup with the comfort and luxury of an SUV. Insofar as the seating capacity is concerned, it is like a 5-seater SUV, and there is an additional deck at the back for carrying up to a ton of goods. There is a slight trade-off, of course, in that the pick-up truck has an open deck versus the close coachwork of a SUV, but there are many options for rear deck covers and such.
Interior-wise, the 2024 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain offers Miura design elements depicting a modern version of the traditional Japanese origami patterns on the dashboard and around the door panels. The Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain offers a spacious cabin with high-quality materials, ergonomic seating, and advanced climate control systems. The rear seats provide ample legroom, while the versatile interior layout can accommodate both passengers and cargo comfortably. Its dual-purpose design allows for a seamless transition between family outings and heavy-duty tasks, out-matching many standard SUVs in versatility.
Despite the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain being a pick-up truck, it is nevertheless packed with cutting-edge technology and comprehensive safety systems.
The Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain comes equipped with a state-of-the-art infotainment system, complete with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and multiple connectivity options. It also boasts a full suite of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) including lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. The front stereoscopic camera now comes with an improved field of vision from 120 degrees to 140 degrees, allowing a wider detection area and thus greater safety.
New to the 2024 model is Rear Cross Traffic Braking (RCTB). In addition to alerting the driver of an obstacle at the rear of the vehicle, it also brakes automatically if the driver does not respond to the alert. Together, these advanced features provide enhanced safety and convenience, elevating the driving experience beyond what typical SUVs offer.
Personally, I would seriously consider the Isuzu D-Max X-terrain as an alternative to an SUV for a number of reasons. Firstly, the duty structure in Malaysia favors the pick-up truck when compared to a similar-sized SUV, so I am able to get a pick-up truck for a much lower price level. As said above, the cost advantage allows for a pick-up truck such as the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain to have more features packaged into it than a similarly-priced SUV. Thus, if I were to select an SUV in the same price bracket, it would have to be smaller in size and capacity, or have much less features. Then, in terms of safety features, in particular ADAS features, the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain is on par or above many SUVs available. Additionally, if I need to take my vehicle off-road, it would outperform most SUVs, without a doubt. Closer to home, in our almost-daily flash flood prone environment, the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain can match or outperform any SUV with its 800mm Best-in-Class wading depth. Finally, if you need to carry durians, you can do it without the smell!
In terms of running costs, the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain is one of the most fuel-efficient in its category. Past achievements show that it can easily achieve more than 1,000 km on one tank of fuel. With today’s fuel prices, this is definitely a boon to users.
All things said and done, the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain is still a pick-up truck and not a SUV – and other than the fact that it has a rear deck instead of a closed coachwork configuration, it has more advanced features than most SUVs, therefore we can say that it is indeed more SUV than most SUVs. Furthermore, the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain comes with 7 Years Unlimited Mileage Warranty for peace-of-mind ownership experience.
