The iconic two-door roadster, the Mazda MX-5 RF, has been updated for 2022 to gain an enhanced Jinba Ittai feel. Jinba Ittai is the term Mazda uses to describe the dynamic bond between the driver and the car.
Award-winning Design
The MX-5 is designed and engineered with Mazda’s human-centric development philosophy in pursuit of instilling the joy of driving. The company’s unique “KODO: the Soul of Motion” design for the MX-5 gave the roadster a Red Dot award in 2017 for Best of the Best Design. The Mazda MX-5 RF is the hard-top version of the roadster with a retractable hard roof, and features beautiful proportions, flowing lines, and dramatic contours that command a striking road presence.
The driver-centric design and responsive handling of the Mazda MX-5 also becomes a natural extension of one’s body and creates a unique and exhilarating relationship and experience.
Enhanced Jinba Ittai
The Mazda MX-5 RF is engineered to be a pure driver’s car; well-balanced, lightweight, and with an outstanding power-to-weight ratio to provide engaging handling and performance. For 2022, the Mazda MX-5 RF has been enhanced with a new feature to further deepen the sense of connection between the driver and car. The new Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) is found in both the automatic (AT) and manual (MT) variants.
KPC is a unique technology available only for the Mazda MX-5. This concept involves the rear suspension which is designed to generate an “anti-lift” force when the brakes are applied. KPC takes full advantage of the characteristic of this suspension that when a slight brake force is applied to the inner rear wheel when cornering under conditions with high G-force, the rear suspension will pull the vehicle body down and suppress body roll. This results in a flatter body angle when cornering.
The rear-wheel drive 2022 Mazda MX-5 RF remains unchanged with a SkyActiv-G 2.0 litre engine providing 181hp and 205Nm. Maximum speed is claimed to be 220km/h. The roadster comes with a choice of a six-speed manual transmission or quick-shifting automatic transmission with steering wheel paddle shifters. Both are also SkyActiv-Drive gearboxes.
Other unchanged specification include Wireless Apple CarPlay™, i-Activsense safety features such Adaptive LED Headlights (ALH), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA), Smart City Brake Support (SCBS), Driver Attention Alert (DAA) and Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS).
