GAC GS3 – Genting Hill Climb / 1.5 NA engine / B-Segment SUV /6-speed Auto / YS Khong Driving
Launched at the end of last year, the GAC GS3 has finally got into our hands and off course, we had to take it up our favourite mountain to shake it down.
The question is whether this GAC GS3, also from China, but is imported as CKD by WTC Automotif (M) Sdn. Bhd., which is affiliated to the Tan Chong Group, is good enough to wrest back some of the market share that is currently dominated by the X50.
It is a B-segment SUV, powered by a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated gasoline engine, that delivers a decent 114PS and 150Nm of torque, with drive to the front wheels through an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission. It has a 63PS deficit in power, but it offers a more consistent and perhaps better fuel consumption under certain situations.
Priced from RM96,800, it certainly looks quite a bargain for those who want an affordable SUV, that has the basic safety features but no ADAS.
Driven at normal speeds, it pulls rather well, and most people would be very happy with it. On the mountain, when push gets to shove, things may be different, or is it?
